Festival of Flight this weekend

Join us from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at Prestwick STEM Academy for an afternoon of kite flying, performances, crafts and much more! The Up, Up & Away! Festival of Flight, presented by The Tribute Lakeside Golf and Resort Community and the City of The Colony, returns for a seventh year. Celebrating all forms of flight, this festival will feature kite flying and demonstrations, music, birding demonstration, paper airplane making, food and fun. Bring the entire family to this all-ages outdoor celebration! Prestwick is at 3101 Stonefield Drive in The Colony. New light at Standridge/Memorial

Contractors have been putting the finishing touches on the new traffic signal at Memorial and Standridge drives. Motorists are advised that the new signal went live on Monday, May 2. Testing and programming were completed in the morning, with the light fully operational by early afternoon. Please be mindful of the new light and drive safe!

TCFD performs 'perfect delivery'

Texas Health recently recognized several members of The Colony Fire Department for what was described as a "perfect" baby delivery. In mid February, crews from TCFD Engine 11 & Medic 13 delivered a patient's baby girl in the ambulance on the Dallas North Tollway while en route to the hospital. Hospital staff who received the patients upon arrival commended TCFD for the quality of neonatal care provided both to the baby and her mother. The crew of Engine 11 is Capt. Tyler Hawkins, Appartus/Operator Jon Coker, and Firefighters Travis Thurston and John Crowe. The crew of Medic 13 is Paramedics Kristen Day and Andy Williams. Great job, everyone!

TCPD boasts Executive Leadership graduate

Congratulations to Lt. Matthew Moody (center) for completing the 59th session of the School of Executive Leadership late last month. The eight-week course is presented by the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration and the Center for American and International Law, located in Plano. Also pictured, at left, is Assistant Police Chief Jay Goodson and, at right, Assistant Police Chief Brent Brown. Outstanding accomplishment, Lt. Moody!

May is National Bike Month

During its regular meeting on May 3, The Colony City Council proclaimed May as National Bike Month in The Colony. Your Parks & Recreation Department reminds you that Bike Month isn’t about riding the furthest or the most often. It’s about riding when you can, encouraging others, and spreading the joys of bike riding far and wide. Whether you’re riding for fun, fitness or with family, or taking essential trips to work or shop, you are part of the movement for safer streets, connected communities, a healthier planet, and happier people. We'll miss you, Pam!

It was both a sad and joyous day as we recently bid farewell to longtime Community Services Director Pam Nelson, who retired on May 2 after 35 years of service to this community. Many thanks for all you've done for The Colony, Pam!

What else is In THE News?

During its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 3, The Colony City Council approved a Specific Use Permit to allow for a new brewpub to occupy the building formerly housing Urban 8 Food Court.
Also on Tuesday, the Council approved a contract in the amount of $245K in CDC funding with Child's Play Inc. for the purchase and installation of the West Shore Park playground equipment. The park remains in development.

We want to hear from you! Denton County is seeking public input for an update to its Hazard Mitigation Plan, which includes The Colony. Public input will help the project team to analyze and respond to potential hazards affecting residents throughout the County. Residents are encouraged to take an online survey. More info about the process is available on our website.
The City of The Colony is currently accepting applications for city boards. Board members are appointed by the City Council to serve in a volunteer capacity. Applications are being accepted in the City Secretary’s Office for open positions at this time. Contact the City Secretary for more information.
The City of The Colony is hosting a Red Cross blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, May 6, at The Colony Annex (6804 Main St.). Visit the Red Cross website to make an appointment in advance.
