Winter Weather Notice

The US National Weather Service-Fort Worth is monitoring the potential for extreme winter weather conditions across North Texas Feb. 2-5, 2022. Residents are advised to keep up with the latest weather info from your local weather media or the National Weather Service-Fort Worth.

Closures, delays

In anticipation of frigid temperatures and hazardous road conditions, City of The Colony offices and facilities will be closed Thursday, Feb. 3, and Friday, Feb. 4. The Library and Recreation Center will be closing early at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 2. We thank you in advance for your patience.

As of this publication, trash/recycling services will not run on Thursday, Feb. 3. Thursday’s route will be completed Friday, Feb. 4, and Friday’s route will be completed Saturday, Feb. 5. Please check back to the city's website and/or social media pages for updates regarding any further delays due to the unfolding winter storm.

Preparedness

We encourage residents to visit the Preparedness/Emergency Management section of our website for information on emergency kits and communication plans. Most importantly, take steps in advance to protect the "Four Ps" at your home or business:

Power Outages

State officials have indicated that the power grid is expected to remain stable during upcoming weather events. However, that does not mean that frozen water or downed trees won't impact service to specific neighborhoods around North Texas. Should your power go out, report the outage to your utility provider, which would be either Oncor or CoServ:

For Oncor, report online or call 888-313-4747; and,
For CoServ, report online, call 844-330-0762 or text OUT to 855-938-3496.

To help conserve energy, our partners at CoServ suggest:

Setting your thermostat to 68 or lower, and,
Turning down your water heater temperature setting to warm (120 degrees F).

Warming Station

In the event you do lose power and need to seek shelter, Next Steps-The Colony will be operating a warming station starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Hope Community Church (5204 South Colony, Ste. 200, southwest corner of Paige/South Colony), for anyone who may have need. For more information, call Next Steps at 214-636-1207 or 214-769-6730.

The community is invited to a pair of upcoming seminars about urban wildlife - 7 p.m. Feb. 15 and/or 10 a.m. Feb. 26 - hosted by The Colony Animal Services at The Colony Community Center, 5151 North Colony Blvd. The presentations will cover the basics of coyotes and bobcats in our area, and provide tips for how to coexist peacefully with them. We will also cover other small mammals such as opossums and raccoons, plus more. The class is for all residents of The Colony, whether you are a homeowner or apartment dweller. The programs are FREE but registration is required by calling 972-624-2246.

Officials break ground on Firehouse No. 5

City dignitaries joined with represenatives from Steele & Freeman, Inc. and Matthews Southwest to celebrate the groundbreaking of Firehouse No. 5 in The Tribute the morning of Jan. 22, 2022. Upon completion, the firehouse will provide quicker response times for emergencies and "really improve the quality of life for the folks out here," Mayor Richard Boyer said. During its regular meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 1, The Colony City Council approved a resolution accepting a $400,000 Local Park Grant from Texas Parks & Wildlife for the development of West Shore Park in the Eastvale neighborhood.
Also on Feb. 1, the City Council approved a contract amendment for the purchase and installation of the Kids Colony Splash Park Phase 2 Amenities.
It's time to dance! Join The Colony Parks & Recreation for the 17th annual Sweetheart Ball (formerly Daddy-Daughter Dance) on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Cascades Event Center. The event is open to all fathers (and father-figures) and daughters ages 3-12. Tickets are on sale now!

Residents looking for COVID-19 testing or vaccines are encouraged to contact Denton County Public Health. DCPH is offering free testing clinics as well as vaccination events. Vaccines close to home from other providers can also be found by visiting vaccines.gov/search.
