'Safe Outdoor Dogs Act' in effect

The Colony Animal Services (TCAS) wishes to remind residents that the "Safe Outdoor Dogs Act" (Texas S.B. 5) went into effect Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022. Here are some highlights from the new law: 

  • Owners must use approved cable tie-outs, trolley systems, or "zip lines;" NO tethering with weight or chains;
  • Tether must be attached to a properly fitting collar or harness;
  • Dogs must have adequate shelter from extreme weather;
  • Dogs must be able to avoid standing water; and,
  • Dogs must have access to clean drinkable water.

If you see outdoor dogs in your community whose level of care does not meet the requirements outlined in the law, TCAS encourages you to document and report to law enforcement and/or animal services. Perez, Lockett crowned dance champs

Friends and supporters of United Way of Denton County gathered in socially distanced fashion Jan. 15, 2022, at the grand ballroom at the Denton Convention Center for the 10th annual UNITED Tribute Gala. Despite limiting ticket sales to 70% capacity, the gala raised over $230,000 to reach an impressive 10-year milestone surpassing $1 million raised for United Way of Denton County to improve and transform lives across Denton County. In addition, The Colony Deputy City Manager Joe Perez and his dance partner, Kenya Lockett from Denton ISD, were crowned dance champs on the night. Congrats, Joe & Kenya!

What else is In THE News?

  • The Colony City Council on Tuesday approved a site plan for Fire Station No. 5, to be located on a 3.4-acre tract south of the intersection of Lebanon Road and Scotty's Lake Lanes. Current plans are for a two-bay station staffed with an engine company and paramedics, with the option to further expand in the future with ambulance service. Construction will begin this year. Residents can review the meeting discussion on our website.
  • The Colony Public Library's next Storywalk is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Slay/Baker Park, 5600 Baker Drive. Enjoy a story and the outdoors at the same time! Read a book page-by-page as you walk in the park. For more information, call the library at 972-625-1900 or visit them on social media, @tcpltx.
  • As of Jan. 10 and continuing through Feb. 15, a city contractor is performing work to improve the drainage on Windhaven Parkway, east of Plano Parkway, west of Andover Drive. One lane of westbound traffic along Windhaven, between the intersections with Andover and Walnut Creek Lane, will be closed daily in order to perform the necessary work for this project. Motorists may experience delays in the area. Seek an alternate route if possible. Please drive safe in work zones and thank you for your patience!
  • Residents looking for COVID-19 testing or vaccines are encouraged to contact Denton County Public Health. DCPH is offering free testing clinics as well as vaccination events. Vaccines close to home from other providers can also be found by visiting vaccines.gov/search.
