Update to status of city facilities

During its regular meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 7, The Colony City Council received a presentation from city staff regarding an update on the status of city facilities during the pandemic:

While taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of staff and patrons, The Colony Recreation Center will reopen to the public starting Monday, Oct. 19. The facility's various amenities will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. by appointment only. Call 972-625-1106 for more information.
The indoor pool of The Colony Aquatic Park will reopen to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting Oct. 13, by appointment only. The outdoor pool is closed for the fall-winter season. Call 972-624-2225 for more information.
The Colony Community Center will remain closed to the public through at least the end of 2020.

In other recent pandemic-related news, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced in a video message on Oct. 7 that bars would be permitted to reopen at 50% capacity starting Oct. 14 in regions where the COVID hospitalization rate remains below 15%. County Commissioners would be required to opt-in to reopening and agree to enforce safety measures. Denton County Judge Andy Eads has indicated that Denton County will be filing the requisite paperwork with the state to allow for the newly announced reopenings, which also include an increase in capacity limits to 75% for movie theaters, museums and libraries, water parks, and other similar businesses previously held to 50%. Fall Clean-Up, food drive set for Oct. 17

The annual City-Wide Fall Clean-Up is coming soon! Residents of The Colony may bring trash and refuse, such as large tree limbs, furniture, appliances, lumber, remodeling debris, fencing materials and scrap metal for convenient disposal. Council, CDC cut ribbon on new swim beach

The new swim beach at Stewart Creek Park is now open! The Colony City Council and Community Development Corp. board members held a brief (socially distanced) ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 6, to celebrate the completion of the latest improvement project at the park. The weather for this weekend looks perfect for a beach day, so stop by and check out this beautiful new amenity! #PlayTC

Alexander named Officer of the Month

Congratulations to TCPD Officer J.P. Alexander for receiving The Colony Chamber of Commerce Officer of the Month Award this week. Officer Alexander is the SRO for Lowell H. Strike Middle School in The Tribute.

TCFD recognized for medical services

Leaders from Texas Health Resources-Plano came by Central Fire Station recently to provide lunch and challenge coins to The Colony Fire Department's paramedics and firefighter-paramedics in recognition for the department's advanced level of medical care. Of note, TCFD medics recently performed a "perfectly placed" surgical cricothyrotomy to obtain an airway for a patient. Fire Chief Scott Thompson said many paramedics go an entire career without performing this procedure, and that the recognition speaks to the department's focus on providing the very best in emergency medical services within a fire-first preparedness culture.

Library hosts virtual book club

Introducing TCPL's Online Brown Bag Book Club! Our first virtual meeting will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, using GoToMeeting. We’ll discuss The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan. This title is available in paperback at TCPL and is also available as a downloadable e-book and audiobook via Hoopla, a free TCPL digital resource, www.hoopladigital.com. Community Center hosts live concert

At 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, the community is invited to enjoy an entire Pickin' & Grinnin' concert in the great outdoors! Performers will set up on the side parking lot between the Community Center and the playground. Bring a lawn chair or sit in a chair we provide. Also, bring something to drink, a snack, or a picnic lunch and a hat/umbrella for shade. Registration is required. American Heroes: A Salute to Veterans is on schedule for Saturday Nov. 7! Visit the event website, www.SaluteAmericanHeroes.com, for all the details on the 2020 version of the city's signature event.
Join The Colony PD and FD at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at the TCHS softball field for the second annual Fire vs Police Softball Game! All attendees are asked to bring canned goods or non-perishable food items for the local foodbank. COVID-19 measures to disinfect the bleachers will be in place. Please wear a mask and practice social-distancing!
City offices, facilities, and the library will be closed Monday, Oct. 12, for Columbus Day. The library will be closed Oct. 10-12.
The North Texas Tollway Authority recently lowered the speed limit along the SRT/SH 121 frontage roads to 50mph. More details are available on the city's Facebook page.
