As part of its continued commitment honoring the service and sacrifices of veterans in our community, The Colony City Council has approved an amendment to the city’s Master Fee Schedule that offers military veterans a 10% discount on their utility bills.
To take advantage of the adjustment, active or retired veterans may sign-up through an online form or in person at the city’s Customer Services Department at City Hall, 6800 Main St. Participating veterans must present a valid military ID, options of which include active/retired/reservist ID cards, discharge paperwork (e.g. DD 214), and/or an American Legion membership card with driver’s license or other state-issued photo ID.
“We have a high percentage of veterans in our community, of which we are proud to take care of,” Mayor Joe McCourry said. “This is just another way of helping those individuals, many of whom are handicapped from their service. This is a way we can help give back.”
The discount is only available through active enrollment and will be applied to the following month’s utility usage from your enrollment date. It will not be applied retroactively. The sign-up period for qualified residents begins Oct. 16. Depending on when you enroll, the discount could take effect as early your November statement reflecting October utility usage.
The discount is available for both renters and homeowners with residential utility accounts in the name of the veteran. It applies to water and sewer only (not trash and recycling). Unfortunately, it will not be available for residents in multi-family dwellings as those customers are billed collectively.
