Accident Investigation Team (AIT)
When a fatal or serious traffic accident occurs in the City of The Colony, The Colony Police Department turns to the Accident Investigation Team (AIT) to conduct the investigation.
Purpose:
The purpose of The Colony Police Department’s AIT is to investigate contributing factors of an incident, near-miss or hazard, and determine corrective actions. It is a legislative requirement to record the details surrounding an incident and the follow-up actions implemented.
Mission:
The mission of the AIT is the methodical collection of evidence (facts), and the analysis and interpretation of the evidence. The fundamental purpose is to identify the cause(s), why the accident happened, and to recommend corrective actions to prevent or minimize the chance of a reoccurrence.
Team Members
The Accident Investigation Team consists of a patrol lieutenant, who commands the unit along with a patrol sergeant and five officers from the Traffic Unit, the Patrol Division, and the Criminal Investigations Division. The officers receive advanced training in the area of accident investigation and reconstruction from TEEX Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service.
The AIT utilizes a vast amount of equipment, such as drones and surveying electronics, to complete a thorough and detailed investigation. It is the mission of the AIT to provide an accurate account of the crash incident to those involved and their families.
