The Security Survey is the primary tool used in crime prevention to recognize, appraise and anticipate loss potential. A security survey is an in depth on-site examination of a physical facility and its surrounding property (industrial plant, business, hospital, other public building, or a residence). The survey is conducted to determine a facility's security status, to identify deficiencies or security risks, to define the protection needed, and to make recommendations to minimize criminal opportunity.

The Texas H.E.A.T. Program (Help End Auto Theft), a statewide vehicle registration program, was developed by the Department of Public Safety under the direction of the Automobile Theft Prevention Authority. The program authorizes law enforcement officers to stop registered vehicles in the program when observed on public streets anywhere in Texas between the hours of 1:00am and 5:00am to determine whether the vehicle is being operated by the owner or with the owner's permission. Vehicle owners participating in the program may also voluntarily extend the authority to a peace officer to stop a registered vehicle that crosses or is about to cross an international border directly from the state of Texas. The goal of H.E.A.T. is to help reduce auto theft in the state of Texas. As such, this program is primarily a deterrent to auto theft rather than an apprehension tool. To register, please contact the Department of Public Safety at 1-888-447-5933. In an effort to better serve citizens of Texas, the Department of Public Safety has requested that local departments no longer register citizens for the H.E.A.T. program, but rather deal with the Department of Public Safety. How can someone steal your identity? Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information such as your name, Social Security number, credit card number or other identifying information, without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes.

Identity theft is a serious crime. People whose identities have been stolen can spend months or years - and their hard-earned money - cleaning up the mess thieves have made of their good name and credit record. In the meantime, victims may lose job opportunities, be refused loans, education, housing or cars, or even get arrested for crimes they didn't commit.

If you think you have been the victim of Identity Theft, here's what to do now:

  • Contact the fraud departments of any one of the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on your credit file. The fraud alert requests creditors to contact you before opening any new accounts or making any changes to your existing accounts. As soon as the credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the other two credit bureaus will be automatically notified to place fraud alerts, and all three credit reports will be sent to you free of charge.

  • Close the accounts that you know or believe have been tampered with or opened fraudulently. Use an ID Theft Affidavit when disputing new unauthorized accounts.

  • File a police report. Get a copy of the report to submit to your creditors and others that may require proof of the crime.

  • File your complaint with the FTC. The FTC maintains a database of identity theft cases used by law enforcement agencies for investigations. Filing a complaint also helps us learn more about identity theft and the problems victims are having so that we can better assist you.
