Sometimes life can throw you a curve, and you have to face some tough decisions as to whether or not keep little Fido or Felix. If you must surrender ownership of your animal to us, you'll need to provide the following information:
- If you have rabies vaccination records, spay/neuter and microchip records, BRING THEM WITH YOU. As these are requirements for adoption, they will help your pet get adopted faster and less expensive for the new owners.
- If your animal is AKC registered, you may opt to bring that paperwork in as well. We have an easier time getting verified purebred animals into breed-specific rescues.
- You will need to bring $20 per animal, cash or check only. This helps us to feed and house your animal while it's here waiting for adoption.
We cannot guarantee we'll place your animal up for adoption, but we'll make every effort to do so. In the event the animal becomes sick or aggressive, we may be forced to face the possibility of euthanizing it.
We do work with many local rescue groups, such as Frisco Humane and the SPCA of Texas, to help get animals out of our shelter before we have to face the tough decisions. Although purebred dogs are much easier to get into rescue, we do work with non-breed-specific rescues for those All-American dogs that come in from time to time.
We cannot call you if your animal does not get adopted or is scheduled to be euthanized. We receive so many animals per day that it makes it impossible for us to follow-up in these cases. Euthanasia is our LAST RESORT, and we take this matter very seriously. After all, we take care of these animals daily, get to know and love them. We want them to find a good home, and do our best to accomplish this.
Euthanasia
Whether sick or injured, there comes a time when every pet-owner must face the toughest decision for their animal: whether or not to have the animal put-to-sleep.
The Colony Animal Services provides euthanasia for animal owners at low-cost to help alleviate some of the burden. Our fees are as follows:
- Euthanasia Fee: $20
- Surrender Fee: $20
- Disposal Fee: $10
In addition, we do offer private cremations services if you would like to have your animal's remains returned to you, for a fee of $75 (in lieu of the $50 fee above). Within two weeks, the ashes of your pet will be returned to you sealed in an urn.
When you are ready to have the procedure done, bring the animal with you. You don't need an appointment, but it is always best to call ahead to insure there are enough officers present to perform the procedure (our operating procedures require two officers to be present during any euthanasia, for safety reasons). Once the paperwork has been filled out, we will generally perform the procedure within the hour. You will be allowed a time to visit with your pet before the procedure, but you cannot witness or otherwise be present while the procedure is being performed. You do have the option of viewing the body after the animal is deceased, if you wish.
Euthanasia, depending on the size, breed, and overall health of the animal, can take anywhere between 1 to 15 minutes. An injection is given into the vein, which puts the animal into a deep sleep within 3 to 5 seconds. At this point, the animal feels no pain. Within 1 to 5 minutes, the animal's breathing will slow and stop, and minutes later the heart will stop. At no time does the animal feel any pain.
As we understand the impact this type of decision has on pet-owners, we are always available for consultation. We are not, however, veterinarians, so if you have vet-specific type questions, please contact your vet. We can only answer questions about the procedure itself.
